Although 75,000 copies were initially pressed for the American market, the album sold half a million by November 1987. Ride the Lightning peaked at number 100 on the Billboard 200 with virtually no radio exposure. Two months after its release, Elektra Records signed Metallica to a multi-year deal and reissued the album. The band performed at major music festivals such as Monsters of Rock and Day on the Green later that year. Metallica promoted the album on the Bang That Head That Doesn't Bang European tour in late 1984, and on its North American leg in the first half of 1985. Ride the Lightning received a positive response from music critics, who saw it as a more ambitious effort than its predecessor. It is the last album to feature songwriting contributions from former lead guitarist Dave Mustaine, and the first to feature contributions from successor Kirk Hammett. The overall recording costs were paid by Metallica's European label Music for Nations because Megaforce was unable to cover it. Beyond the fast tempos of its debut Kill 'Em All, Metallica broadened its approach by employing acoustic guitars, extended instrumentals, and more complex harmonies. Bassist Cliff Burton introduced the basics of music theory to the band and had more input in the songwriting. The title was taken from a passage in Stephen King's novel The Stand, in which a character uses the phrase to refer to execution by electric chair.Īlthough rooted in the thrash metal genre, the album showcased the band's musical growth and lyrical sophistication. The artwork, based on a concept by the band, depicts an electric chair being struck by lightning flowing from the band logo. The album was recorded in three weeks with producer Flemming Rasmussen at Sweet Silence Studios in Copenhagen, Denmark. 85x runabout8/2/2023 If you're dumb enough to pay for a picture, well, you've got a picture. Moreover, they don't deceive customers (what con men you mentioned do). They're selling these things to make money, that much should be obvious by this point. I don't see SC as taking advantage of anyone's goodwill at this point. It also doesn't matter whether anyone but the deceiver in question knows about the deception. Lying doesn't matter for the market (indeed, pretty lies are in very high demand), but it makes a world of difference when it comes to morality. On the other hand, someone who genuinely believes that these prophecies will come true aren't doing anything immoral, strictly speaking (though he may be deluded, but that's another thing). Someone who sells prophecies knowing that they're just making it up is definitely immoral. I believe that whether this sort of thing is moral or not depends on intentions behind it. So you classify all fortune tellers, supposed psychics and the like as con artists? I don't think it's right, though I can see why you could think so. Perhaps that's your personal goal and I'm even inclined to believe in this, but it isn't mine and I can assure you it's not where the overwhelming majority's aspirations go. The only way such a logic could prevail would be if we defined human beings as being perfectly rational at all times, careless amoral nihilistic beings who only care for market signals and so on. So it's not immoral, right? No, there is such a thing as taking advantage of people's good will, and then there's taking advantage on the order of magnitude that Star Citizen has deployed, which is staggering. It matters not if they are lying according to this market logic (how can you even know that without telepathy), it matters merely that there is a kind of a service provided and that there are always people giving these guys money for it. Con artists do this all the time, providing "services" like mind reading and other supernatural shenanigans for a lot of money. It's the current overwhelming ideology, wherein anything that the market does, it's not immoral, because there's supply and demand between human agents. The reason why your demand and supply argument is wrong is that you take it dogmatically to be right, or at least not immoral. But everyone should feel bad for doing it. Since people want these things and want more of them (to the point they're willing to pay), why not go with the latter option?Įxploitation is deeply immoral, except for BDSM-type of exploits, you know, fetiches. Assuming these things are created by paid employees, the choice is to have them available for money or not make them at all. Someone dumb or obsessed enough to pay for them deserves everything he gets. Sure, it's exploitation, but if someone essentially agrees to be exploited, is it really wrong? Nobody is forcing them to buy those things, the way out is wide open and there is no physical addiction. SC merchandise isn't one of these things (unless, of course, you're a die-hard hater). If you classify selling fancy pictures as wrong, what about paper greeting cards, posters, merchandise, autographs and other stuff like that? Is it also immoral to print out a fancy picture (since that's what many posters are these days) and sell it for many times the price of ink and paper it took to create it? Sure, there are things bought and sold that are immoral, but for most part, these are things that shouldn't even exist. These terms are used interchangeably so bloody often that they got me doing it. While still predominantly audiophile, Qobuz is more mainstream than it was last year, but not nearly as much as it will be next year. This and a great team all focused on the same goals have helped solidify our position in the market. There’s nothing like interacting with music lovers on a personal level and letting them experience Qobuz for themselves. Panels, flash DJ sessions, music events, Streaming Music Matters seminars and having a large presence in the headphone arena have all had a great impact. Even before the launch, we were sponsoring most of the audio shows in the US. The attention to the industry coupled with all of the additional editorial, industry support and being geared toward the music lover is paying off.ĪH: What’s it like marketing to both the core audiophile and the mainstream? How do you tackle that puzzle?ĭS: Another huge positive has been being on the road and supporting the audio industry from a grassroots level. Qobuz seems to be at the cool kids table. We don’t have quite the reach of Amazon, but in terms of feedback, articles and position, we are immediately recognized as better than say a Spotify or Apple music, or even Amazon. However, actual numbers dwarfed our expectations after the price drop. How did the numbers match up with your expectations?ĭS: At first, we were meeting, or coming close to expectations. I want to send Bezos a dozen roses just for coming out with the messaging.ĪH: Qobuz had a solid launch. Since Amazon started touting their HD, the promotion of high resolution on their part helped advance our message two, three years – by my estimation. The best thing about Amazon coming into the market is recognition of Hi-Res on the whole. With the new pricing, every important metric improved and we’re moving beyond the audiophile alone. Now more mainstream music lovers are willing to give Hi-Res a try without having to spend much more than a Spotify user. Paid annually, a year subscription is actually cheaper than Amazon, at only $12.50 a month. And so instead of staying at $25 a month, we were able to renegotiate with partners and match their price at $15 per month. Amazon launched their HD service several months ago. We’ve reached an apex where not everyone has necessarily tried it, but at they least know Qobuz, what it is and there is interest and support from the audiophile community as a whole.ĪH: Both Qobuz and Amazon were subject to a bit of a price change this year, can you tell me a little about that?ĭS: Yea. Now everybody in the audio industry knows who we are and many are recommending Qobuz on a consistent basis. For many months, this was the recurring question, however, we’ve made great strides. We are finally to the point where people have stopped asking me “what is Qobuz?” or how to pronounce it. Audio-Head got a chance to catch up with US representative David Solomon at the recent Florida Audio Show and drill into some of the finer details of the past cycle for Qobuz.ĪH: We here on the one year anniversary of the US Launch of Qobuz, can you tell us what’s happened with the company in that time span?ĭS: Lets see. Most noteworthy of course is the drop in price for the high resolution Studio Premier streaming tier from $25 down to $15, but the streaming landscape continues to evolve and grow as more players enter the burgeoning field of what is sure to fully replace downloaded music in a few short years. Valentines Day marks the first full revolution around the sun since the audiophile-friendly platform was first launched in the US, it has been an interesting 12 months of growth for the France-based company. It almost seems strange that the one year anniversary of high resolution music streaming service Qobuz has already crept upon us. Observation duty8/2/2023
Shutter encoder vs handbrake8/2/2023 Now, I have written in decent detail about what my Unraid server looks like and what it is comprised of here. Without the server, none of this would be possible well it would but not the way that I have laid it out. So I think it is most important to start with the server because this is truly the backbone of this entire build. Then of course once all editing is done, I will just upload that to YouTube or where ever on the internet. When Handbrake is done, it puts the finished video into the export folder, from there I can easily grab those files and import than into Final Cut Pro X at my leisure. Handbrake see’s that new files have been placed into the folder and begins transcoding them into a 4K 60FPS MP4 file. I have to manually pull all video from the camera into the watch folder that is on my Unraid server.
